Staying motivated, driven, and on track is not easy, especially for parents who have endless other to-dos on the daily. That’s why I’m sharing my secret to accountability: setting a Misogi goal - a big goal, a goal that scares me, and that I have a 50/50 chance of failing. Think of it like the annual boss-level challenge that makes your daily habits feel like warm-ups

Here are a few of my Misogi goals from the past year, as examples of what these can look like:

  • Launching a business (Maribou)
  • Hiking up Ajax Mountain (we had to shift and hike Snowmass instead)

When my son turned five, we decided to set his very first Misogi goal. Now, he’s hooked, and it helped him to build really important skills this year like:

  • Consistency
  • Dedication
  • Grit
  • Determination

And, an understanding of the connection between hard work and results.

Here are John’s 5-Year-Old Misogi goals, for inspiration:

  • Learning how to swim on his own
  • Practicing and trying out for a sports team (hockey!)

STEPS TO SETTING A MISOGI GOAL WITH YOUR CHILD

  1. Lead by example: set your own goal, and talk about the steps you are taking to achieve it, and the struggles you’re facing.

  2. Ask questions: focus on something they really want to accomplish

  3. Strategize together: Plan steps together to work towards the goal, like scheduling weekly swimming lessons if the goal is to learn to swim independently

  4. Be flexible: Practice isn’t forced. Your child doesn’t have to buy in every single day. But the more time you dedicate as a family, like anything else, the more likelihood there is to success. This is also a great learning moment for children.

  5. Track progress together: Set markers to measure progress and review them together. This is a journey - there will be set backs, highs, and lows. Supporting your child is key.

Misogi goals aren’t about being perfect. They are about being purposeful and intentional with your time and effort.

In our family, these goals keep us accountable when motivation fails, when energy levels dip, and when life gets in the way. Are you ready to set a self-defining, Misogi goal? You’ve got this!
